My thoughts
"Christmas Getaway" is a light romance with an easy charm that is definitely carried by the chemistry the two main characters have.
Bridget Regan plays Emory, a travel writer who has just had a breakup and is looking for a "traditional" Christmas experience for her next article.
At times Emory can be a little difficult to like. She shares her knowledge of different Christmas traditions from around the world without anyone asking and never misses an opportunity to tell those around her how much she travels. It comes across as a bit self absorbed.
Other than that, I have nothing negative to say about the movie!
Travis Van Winkle plays Scott, a widower with a young daughter who's just trying to make it through the holiday season.
He's extremely charming and plays the role of a widowed father nervous to open his heart again very well. There's even a conversation he has with his mother where he confides his fear that falling for another woman would be like cheating on his deceased wife.
I don't think I've seen a Hallmark movie yet that addresses that very real guilt that so many have. I found it to be refreshing.
Emory and Scott play off each other well and their first interaction is both funny and believable when she finds him in the cabin!
The little girl who plays Scott's daughter is cute as a button and I loved her interactions with both Emory and her grandmother.
Teryl Rothery plays Scott's mother, who is kind, loving, and supportive. She wants Emory and Scott to get together, but she gives only gentle nudges and never oversteps.
The movie does have a hint of a love triangle with Scott's work colleague Alice, but her screen time is so minimal that it makes the contrived misunderstanding at the end of the film rather silly.
The ending of "Christmas Getaway" is just what you would expect in a Hallmark holiday movie, and the journey there was enjoyable!
Final rating
The movie was fun, charming, and felt like a warm hug! I would happily watch it again and again.
On a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 4.5
